In 2024, the Salzkammergut with Bad Ischl as the banner city will bear the title of European Capital of Culture. For the first time in history, it will take place in the inner Alpine region. A total of 23 municipalities between Roitham am Traunfall and Bad Mitterndorf are part of the Capital of Culture region.

Emperor Franz Joseph I has spent no less than 82 summers in Ischl since 1849 and celebrated 81 birthdays there. But even before the town became Franz Joseph's summer residence in the 19th century, several emperors and other members of the Habsburg family stayed here.
