Explore imperial Bad Ischl in the heart of the Salzkammergut on a wide range of hiking trails. Whether relaxed walks along rivers and lakes or hikes through forests up to the alpine pastures and peaks of the surrounding mountains.
The path from the Rettenbachalm to the Blaa-Alm has been closed since October 2020 until further notice. A hike from Bad Ischl to Altaussee is therefore currently not possible. However, the extensive hiking options on the Rettenbachalm and on the Blaa-Alm are available as normal.
The brine pipeline route between Steeg and Hallstatt is closed until further notice. In addition to rockfalls, timber work and mudslides, ash dieback is another reason for this closure, which has now been in place for some time.
Every hike requires appropriate equipment and preparation. The longer the tour, the more stable the weather needs to be.
Sudden spells of bad weather with rain and lightning are a great danger for hikers.
Fog or residual snow well into the summer can make orientation almost impossible. On the other hand, extreme heat can make various ascents more difficult.
Despite an exact description of the ascent, a hiking map is essential for precise orientation. The following maps are available as a supplement for the hikes presented:
Emergency numbers valid in Austria
Mountain rescue: 140
European emergency number: 112
Over 450 years ago, miners dug deep tunnels into the mountains in Bad Ischl. The "Mitterbergstollen interest group" has restored existing "mouth holes" and sought out and restored tunnel entrances that no longer exist. Up to 16 tunnels of the Pernecker and Lauffner salt deposits can be visited on the signposted theme trail. There is also the mountain church, old miners' houses, the former Schaffer saw and other buildings and ruins. Further information on the theme trail can be obtained from the Bad Ischl tourist office or by clicking on the following link.
In order to present the high ecological value of traditionally managed alpine pastures to the public, information boards on the history, management and animal and plant species found there have been set up on selected alpine pastures. In addition, digital nature trails are being created as a contemporary offering. These allow information about habitats, animals and plants to be downloaded to a smartphone in advance and then accessed on site. The GPS data can also be accessed via outdooractive and alpenvereinaktiv.
With the help of an interactive city map, you can go on a tour of Bad Ischl with your smartphone, follow in the footsteps of writers and musicians or find monuments from the imperial era and many more. Both culturally interested Ischl residents and visitors to the town will discover new things and be amazed at the variety on the cultural trails created by the Ischl Heritage Society.
An adventure trail that focuses on the five senses is designed to familiarise visitors with their own sensory perceptions in an interesting, exciting and surprising way. Various stations such as scent stelae, listening funnels, a tree telephone and numerous other stations turn the ascent into an exciting journey of discovery, where the perceptual phenomena sometimes only become apparent through your own activity. At the summit of Siriuskogl, there is a spacious playground, a telescope on the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Warte and an animal enclosure. The Siriuskogl restaurant is located directly on the Siriuskogl plateau and has long been a meeting place for gourmets and foodies.
