"It's a nightmare with the family tree," says Leopold Altenburg. But his family history is an extraordinary one. After all, he is the great-great-great-grandson of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth - the world-famous "Sissi".
For a long time, he hardly paid any attention to his ancestors until walking the red carpet at the musical "Elisabeth" in Berlin brought him and his origins unexpected attention.
"I didn't know you were such a nobleman" - says Gustl, the Viennese landlord of a coffee house in Berlin - "You have to tell your story".
While searching for clues, Leopold discovers that his grandfather Clemens had a very special babysitter: the emperor himself, whose favourite grandson he was.
Leopold's father Peter lived in the imperial villa in Bad Ischl as a child and teenager. Decades later, Leopold visits the villa's exhibition rooms with his father and experiences how his father touches all the objects without inhibition: "I'm allowed to do that, I'm at home here."
With comedy interludes, songs, a clown act and stories about the creation of his book "The Emperor and his Sunshine", Prince & Clown Leopold Altenburg presents a varied stage programme about his life between past and present, Vienna and Berlin, blue blood and a red nose.
Leopold Altenburg was born and grew up in Graz. Engagements as an actor have taken the Berlin-based artist to Vienna, Salzburg, Bielefeld and Bonn, among other places. He is a hospital clown with the Red Noses International, director of various theatre plays and follows in the footsteps of the Empire and the roots of his origins in documentaries.
