The nature reserve on the Katrin covers around 386 hectares of the popular excursion mountain in Bad Ischl in the Salzkammergut. It is a mixture of species-rich mountain meadows and extensive fields of mountain pines at and above the tree line.
As Bad Ischl's local mountain and thanks to the cable car access, the Katrin is a popular excursion destination. The nature reserve includes those parts of the mountain that are only slightly developed for tourism thanks to a few hiking trails. The mountain forests of copper beech, fir, sycamore maple and Scots pine reach the tree line here. Above this, extensive fields of mountain pines and dwarf shrub heaths stretch out. Alpine roses, blueberries and heather can be found here. It is this mosaic of habitats, which occurred on the border between the mountain forests and the higher alpine regions, that makes the nature on the Katrin so worth protecting.
