Visit the following Carnival events (Suggestions):
Monday, 04th of March 2019 – 3pm (estimated time): Traditional Ebenseer parade
Probably the most famous and wild parade is the “Fetzenzug” in Ebensee. Women and men dress in handmade costumes made from worn-out rags and wooden masks and parade through the city. When they come across people they know they will not hesitate to stick it to them. Wearing your finest clothes not recommended!
Tuesday, 05th of March 2019 – 2pm (estimated time): parade of the „Flinserl“ in Bad Aussee
We recommend a visit paired with your trip around the Dachstein.
The „Flinserl“ dresses consist of natural linen with colourful cloth stains embroidered with figural and ornamental art. The sumptuous costumes are said to have come to Bad Aussee through the salt trade with Venice.
The parade starts usually at 2pm at the inn ”Blaue Traube”. The “Flinserl”-band leads the parade as the “Flinserl”, which are accompanied and protected by the “Zacherl” make their way through the city.
Wednesday, 06th of March 2019 – 2pm (estimated time): „burying the carnival in Bad Ischl“
The carnival ends on Ash Wednesday with a symbolic funeral.
A funeral procession carries a dressed straw doll through the city. At the Steinfeld bridge the doll is lit and thrown into the Traun river. As the burning doll drifts down the river, the heavy-hearted people say their farewells to yet another carnival season.
Fun and good mood
The carnival season is a very important institution in the Salzkammergut. It is not comparable with carnival events in big cities; here the carnival is coined by local custom and tradition.
Depending on which village you decide to visit, you will meet curious figures like the “Fetzen”, “Trommelweiber”, “Flinserl” and “Zacherl”. On Tuesday the festivities end at midnight. On Ash Wednesday the carnival season will be laid to rest with a symbolic funeral.
